HOW TO PLAY AMERICAN MAHJONG
This American Mahjong set features clear, easy-to-recognize acrylic tiles. Use the following beginner-friendly instructions to start playing.
GOAL
Build a 14-tile hand that exactly matches one of the patterns shown on the current American Mahjong card. All players should use the same card.
SETUP
American Mahjong is usually played by four players.
- East begins with 14 tiles.
- The other players begin with 13 tiles.
- Keep your acrylic tiles hidden on your rack.
THE CHARLESTON
Before regular play begins, each player passes three unwanted tiles:
- Pass three tiles to the right.
- Pass three tiles across.
- Pass three tiles to the left.
A second round may be played if everyone agrees. Jokers cannot be passed during the Charleston.
TAKING A TURN
On your turn:
- Draw one tile.
- Keep it if it helps your hand.
- Discard one tile you do not need.
Play then continues around the table.
CLAIMING A DISCARD
You may claim the most recent discard to complete an allowed exposed group:
- Pung: three matching tiles
- Kong: four matching tiles
- Quint: five matching tiles
- Sextet: six matching tiles
Place the completed group face-up, then discard one tile. A discard normally cannot be claimed for a single tile or a pair unless it completes your winning hand.
USING JOKERS
Jokers may replace tiles in matching groups of three or more. They cannot be used as a single tile, in a pair, or during the Charleston.
WINNING
When your 14 tiles exactly match a pattern on the card, say “Mah Jongg!” and reveal your hand.
If all available tiles are used and no one wins, the game ends in a draw.
